What is RSS? RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for news content distribution. It is simple, fast, and light on your bandwidth. It does NOT require you to even visit our website unless you are interested in a particular headline and its summary. It empowers you to read and find the news you want. What software do you need? To read and subscribe to RSS, you need a newsreader program (also known as a "news aggregator"). These programs are usually free and take up very little space on your machine (except for sophisticated versions that also allow publishing). If you use Windows Vista, Internet Explorer can add this feed to your Windows Sidebar. For other versions of Windows, consider Headline Viewer or Amphetadesk. If you use a Mac, consider NetnewsWire Lite or Amphetadesk for Mac. Some others include HotSheet, a Java 2 application that runs on Windows, Mac, Linux and UNIX. Another application, Radio UserLand, is an industrial strength newsreader and publisher. Alternatively, a number of web services provide free RSS aggregation on their websites including Netvibes, Google, Yahoo!, Fyuze and MyWireService. These services do not require you to download any software onto your computer. To subscribe to The Search Light, click the appropriate link below for your news aggregator. If you do not see your aggregator listed, click the first XML link and copy the URL to your clipboard then click the subscribe button in your aggregator and paste the URL into the aggregator. What is Atom? When you see the AtomEnabled logo, it's a sign that the website, software, or device you're using is designed to easily connect and communicate with everything else in the AtomEnabled universe. By using AtomEnabled software and devices, you can keep track of more information in less time from any website whose content is AtomEnabled. And AtomEnabled websites take advantage of the two-way nature of the web, letting you quickly share your thoughts and ideas by publishing to the web from anywhere, in any language. Atom is similar to RSS in that you, the website visitor, can use a news aggregator program to view the site's content without actually visiting the website. Just like RSS, it empowers you to read and find the news you want. It's really up to you to decide which format (RSS or Atom) works best for you. A directory of AtomEnabled news aggregators can be found here. The Anomaly Response Network Google Group also has an RSS/Atom feed of posts. |
